As with all Terrain for Trains layouts, the HO Timber Ridge is formed from solid, sheet styrene (not foam) with all hills, roads, rock outcroppings, roadbed and track plan guide lines molded into the surface. The layout is shipped in two cartons with two panels in each carton. The panels are clearly labeled A, B, C, and D and the instruction sheets tell you exactly how to assemble them. It couldn't be any easier! You can do a temporary-type assembly by pinning the panels together or a permanent assembly by gluing them together. When your Timber Ridge layout arrives, simply slide the panels from the cartons, then place them one at a time on a flat surface measuring five feet by eight feet or more. A 5'x9' ping-pong table makes a perfect Timber Ridge support table. Glue track into place following the molded-in guide lines and printed instructions, place the optional H4015 mountain at the end of the layout, set a few buildings in the village and the industrial part of town (as shown above), and you are ready to run. Trees and other details can come later. Terrain for Trains layout bases from new supplier American Plastics take the hard work out of layout building. These one-piece, molded plastic forms are perfect for folks with limited space or anyone interested in pursuing non-traditional layout building. All of the scenic forms, including rocks, streams, roads, mountains and railroad right-of-way are molded in place. Simply glue the interlocking HO layout sections together; N Scale sections are molded as one piece. No major tools are needed, and complete instructions are provided. Support risers are included that install on the underside of the layout, providing support and creating a firm structure. Then add track, trains, structures and other scenery details (all sold separately) to complete construction. The basic form weighs between eight to 10 pounds, so it's easy to move or store between operating sessions. HO Scale bases are designed for use with Atlas Code 83 or 100 track; minimum curve radius is 18 inches. Forms are available prepainted or unpainted.

Reviewer: Jim W (Ridley Park, PA)
This kit is a bit overpriced for what it actually is: a molded plastic form. The track plan is also inaccurate in several places. The plan provided with the kit differs from the one offered at the manufacturer's Web site, yet both plans leave wide gaps in the rails that are sure to cause derailments. It does save significant time if you don't want to build your terrain from scratch, but expect some improvisation in the layout. Consider purchasing an additional pack of 1"-2.5" Atlas various lengths.

Editors note: 100's of these layouts have been sold and assembled with the track recomended without issue. The manufactured highly recommends NOT deviating from the recommended track plan since this track plan has been proven over and over to work fine when the layout is assembled correctly.
