These models are accurate to the roadname/engine number with regards to the fuel tank size, truck brake cylinders and dynamic/non-dynamic brake hatch. They also feature the precision detail and powerful five-pole motor with dual brass flywheels that KATO models are known for. Each SD38-2 equipped with KATO magnetic knuckle coupler, 8-pin DCC socket and golden-white LED headlight. These models are also "Sound Friendly," featuring the capacity for the optional installation by hobbyists of a 1.1" (28mm) diameter speaker in the fuel tank for use with onboard sound unit (speaker and sound unit available from other manufacturers). Hobbyist-installed detail parts will enhance the enjoyment of these models. The EMD SD38-2 was produced from November 1972 through June 1979. Capable of generating 2000 horsepower, the SD38-2 was essentially the same locomotive as the 4-axle GP38-2 while being built on the 6-axle SD40-2 frame. Although officially considered a medium road-switcher, the SD38-2 is frequently identified with its heavy duty in the steel industry. The locomotive has also been used in both mainline and yard duty by railroads such as the Union Pacific and Chicago & North Western when looking for extra tractive effort. Union Pacific was not an original purchaser of the SD38-2 but now owns the largest fleet in the nation due to merger (C&NW & SP) and purchase from other railroads (C&IM and McCloud). Happy with the success of these locomotives, UP has also rebuilt former Missouri Pacific SD40-2 locomotives to SD38-2 specifications. Our models represent two variations in the UP roster with different truck sideframes, fuel tank sizes, and dynamic or non-dynamic brakes as appropriate to each road number. Two locomotives, in the Standard paint scheme, are former C&IM locomotives while the other two are former SP locomotives in a special "Mini-Wings" paint scheme applied for a short time as these locomotives were repainted for their new owner. UP's SD38-2 locomotives can be found in yard duty all over the system.

Ran perfectly right out of the box, just like you would expect of kato. Strong puller and crisp decals, and detail parts included looked great!
